Wellness and Hot Springs in Cuenca: Thermal Waters, Spas and Fitness

A practical guide to wellness in Cuenca, Ecuador: hot springs in Baños, spas, yoga and sports, with tips for the altitude and the climate.

Wellness and Hot Springs in Cuenca

Cuenca is a calm, cool-climate city with a tradition of hot springs and a growing offering of spas, yoga and sports. This guide explains what to expect and how to plan, without recommending any particular place.

The hot springs of Baños

Most thermal wellness is concentrated in Baños, a parish on the edge of the city, at the foot of a hill where hot mineral water flows. According to Wikivoyage, you can get there by bus in about 15 minutes from a well-known stop on Avenida de las Américas, and several businesses in the area say they are about 15 minutes from the historic center. The local press (Extra, October 2025) reports that some establishments have nearly a century of history.

In Baños you’ll find hosterías and thermal centers with:

  • Thermal water pools, steam room and sauna.
  • Contrast baths (hot and cold water).
  • Thermal mud rooms, steam-cabinet baths and massages.
  • Restaurants and cafés on site.

Reference prices

As a guideline, with a date attached: the newspaper Expreso (February 24, 2025) reported thermal packages ranging from about US$10.50 to about US$25 per person, depending on the venue and what the package includes (for example, a basic package with a thermal pool, steam room and contrast baths, and a more complete one with sauna, steam-cabinet bath and mud). These are approximate figures from that date: confirm the current price and what it includes before you go.

Hot springs in nature

There are also more remote springs. Expreso (February 2025) describes natural hot springs in the Yanuncay valley, at 3,190 m above sea level and about 30 minutes from the city, with pools set among mountains and forest. In places like this the air is colder and there are fewer services; ask about road conditions and closing time.

Spas and massages

Some hotels and thermal centers offer massage therapy, massages, exfoliation and facials. Before booking:

  • Ask what the treatment includes and how long it lasts.
  • Confirm whether you need to reserve in advance.
  • Let them know if you have health problems, are pregnant or take medication.

Yoga, climbing and gyms

In the center there is rooftop yoga, indoor rock climbing, functional training classes and gyms with day-pass options. A YapaTree article (June 2023) describes several of these options. Hours and classes change; confirm before you go. If you’re arriving from low-lying areas, start with gentle classes.

Walking and cycling

Cuenca is a walkable city, and Wikivoyage mentions the riverside paths and the project to expand bike lanes. Walks along the Tomebamba River are a simple way to get around. For something more demanding, Cajas National Park is about 30 km to the west, but it is at much higher elevation, between about 3,160 and 4,450 m, so go with warm clothing, a slow pace and, if you have no experience, a guide.

Taking care at altitude and in the climate

  • The city is at about 2,500 m. In your first few days, lower the intensity of your exercise.
  • Drink water and avoid alcohol before soaking in hot water.
  • Thermal pools are hot: get in for short stretches and get out if you feel dizzy.
  • Bring sandals, a towel, a swimsuit and something warm to put on afterward, because the air is cool.
  • Children, older adults and people with heart or blood pressure problems should consult a doctor beforehand.
  • The dry season (May to September) is usually comfortable for the outdoors; from October to April, bring a rain jacket.

How to combine activities

A morning in Baños with a soak and a local lunch, or an afternoon at the springs after a day of hiking, is a common plan. If you’re staying several weeks, look for classes with a monthly pass.

In short

  • Thermal wellness is mostly in Baños, about 15 minutes from the center.
  • Thermal packages reported in February 2025 ranged from roughly US$10.50 to US$25; verify the current price.
  • There are natural hot springs farther out, with fewer services.
  • In the center there are yoga, climbing and gyms.
  • With the altitude (≈2,500 m), start slowly and stay hydrated.
  • Consult a doctor if you have health conditions.
