Where to Eat in Cuenca: Cuencano Cuisine, Picanterías and Cafés

What to expect from the food in Cuenca, Ecuador: traditional dishes, types of places by area, and tips for eating well without the hassle.

Where to Eat in Cuenca

Eating in Cuenca can be as simple as a neighborhood lunch or as elaborate as a contemporary-cuisine dinner. This guide explains the types of places, the most typical dishes and how to get around by area, without recommending any specific spot.

Dishes you’ll see on menus

Food reporting on the city (Primicias, 2023 and 2024; Extra, 2025) agrees on a base of Andean and southern highlands cooking. These are names that come up again and again:

  • Cuy asado (roast guinea pig): a traditional highlands dish, usually served with potatoes. Ask whether it’s for one person or to share.
  • Fritada, llapingachos, mote sucio and mote pillo: dishes built on corn, potato and pork that are staples of everyday food.
  • Papas con cuero and caldo de mocho: soups and home-style dishes found at neighborhood picanterías.
  • Chancho a la barbosa, roast chicken: roasted meats at casual places.
  • Canelazo and chicha: traditional drinks; canelazo is served hot, which is handy on chilly nights.

Picanterías and set lunches

The picantería is the traditional place for criollo food, often family-run with just a few tables. The almuerzo del día (soup, main course and sometimes dessert and a drink) is the cheapest way to eat in the city. Since prices change, always ask the price before ordering; there is no single rate.

Historic center

It has the greatest variety: traditional restaurants, cafés in old townhouses, tea rooms, places with live music and bakeries. Many of the city’s long-established restaurants are here. A practical tip: some chef-driven restaurants and small cafés open only Monday through Saturday or close early, so check their hours on their website or social media before you go.

Markets

Cuenca has several municipal markets, including Mercado 10 de Agosto, 9 de Octubre and 3 de Noviembre. They’re good for trying home-style food, juices and fruit, and for seeing regional products. Go early if you want more variety, and bring cash in small bills.

Cafés, tea and bakeries

The scene for locally roasted coffee and tea rooms has grown. If you’re into coffee, look for cafés that roast on site and ask about the origin of the beans. There is also a cacao museum in the center that offers chocolate tastings (check that it’s still open).

Baños, Turi and the outskirts

In Baños there are plenty of family restaurants serving fritada, sancocho and mote, designed for the weekend after a stint at the hot springs; the local press (Extra, October 2025) mentions places that are more than 50 years old. Turi, about 10 minutes from the center according to El Mercurio, has restaurants with views of the city. On weekends and holidays they fill up; book if you’re going with a group.

Special diets

In the center there are plant-based options and cafés with vegetarian menus, but traditional cooking is very meat-heavy. If you’re vegetarian or have allergies, explain this clearly and ask how the dish is prepared; broth and lard are common.

Practical tips

  • Although the city is known for its cool climate, the altitude (about 2,500 m) can make heavy meals feel heavier. Take your time eating.
  • Confirm whether the price includes taxes and service: it’s common for them to be added on top at formal restaurants.
  • On weekends and festival dates, such as those in November, book ahead.
  • If you want to eat like a local, ask about the menú del día.
  • Hours change: confirm before you go.

In short

  • Try Cuencano cooking: cuy, fritada, mote, llapingachos, canelazo.
  • To save money, go for the almuerzo del día at picanterías and markets.
  • The historic center has the most variety; Baños and Turi are good weekend outings.
  • Check hours: many places close one day a week or early.
  • Mention dietary restrictions before you order.
